Ferry Point is part of the history of this area and the history of my husband's family. The town was founded around the ferry crossing of the Battle River—one of only two crossings in Alberta. Wagon trails can still be seen on the land and from Google Maps aerial views. The town eventually disappeared when the railroad was built elsewhere. Slowly, people and buildings left. We are bringing life back, establishing permaculture-based gardens, you-pick flower gardens, and historic cabins and buildings which will be off-grid for now.
As a child, Darwin sat on the hills above this land, overlooking the Battle River valley, and dreamed of building a cabin on the ridge. In 2023, we walked the land and decided to begin. We are still building the first cabin, living in it while building and developing the other cabins and farm outbuildings. We needed to access the springs and dig a well, mitigate drainage issues while preserving the land and indigenous species as much as possible, while creating a home and homestead where people (agro-tourists), learn, and enjoy western history, culture, environmentally conscious gardening and farming techniques, and rest.
